Melanie Gunning Clinical Psychologist Edinburgh offers a warm and compassionate therapeutic approach. I always begin with trust and openness. Therapy works best when people feel safe, supported, and understood. I provide a clear and steady focus to help clients make lasting changes.
I use trauma-focused therapies to encourage healing and self-understanding. Clients find a safe space to explore challenges without judgment. Together we agree on goals that guide our sessions. Sometimes this involves direct mental health support. Other times it means strengthening parent-infant relationships. My own personal history fuels my commitment to creating holding spaces. Clients gain clarity about what to keep, grow from, and let go of.
I bring over 15 years of experience from NHS services, having supported people living with anxiety, depression, OCD, and trauma. I worked in specialist trauma centres and maternity settings, also supported parents and infants in neonatal care. Earlier in my career, I carried out research in developmental psychology and mental health. This research background strengthens my clinical practice.
I focus on perinatal and infant mental health. Clients come to me after fertility struggles, pregnancy loss, or birth trauma. I also work with parents during the early months after birth. In addition, I support healthcare professionals working in maternity and neonatal fields. My skills allow me to provide both evidence-based therapies and relational support.
I help people manage anxiety, panic, and perinatal anxiety. I also treat depression and low self-esteem. My practice includes support for OCD, including perinatal OCD. I work with people facing PTSD and complex PTSD after difficult life events.
I provide Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I also use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). For parents and infants, I offer Neonatal Behavioural Observation (NBO). I also use Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) to strengthen early relationships.
I hold a DClinPsych from the University of Edinburgh. I also earned a PhD in Psychology from the University of Reading. My first degree was a BSc (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh. I am a registered member of the HCPC and EMDR-UK.
