We use multiple tests to diagnose cancer accurately:
Biopsy: samples from growths are examined under a microscope.
Fine needle aspirate (FNA): cells are extracted for lab testing.
Endoscopy and laparoscopy: allow specialists to view internal areas and obtain biopsies.
Additional imaging tests include CT, MRI, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine scans.
Surgery remains a primary treatment for many cancers. Preparation includes informed consent and understanding your care plan. Surgery provides the highest chance of cure when cancer has not spread.
Radiation therapy targets tumours with high doses of X-rays. Treatment affects cancer cells and nearby tissues but most recover fully. Common side effects include fatigue, skin changes, and temporary inflammation in targeted areas.
Chemotherapy treats the entire body to eliminate cancer cells. Drugs may be administered orally, intravenously, or as infusions. Side effects vary and can include nausea, hair loss, or low blood counts. Chemotherapy may be used before surgery (neoadjuvant) or after treatment (adjuvant) to improve outcomes.
Patients may explore complementary therapies such as diet adjustments. It is important to inform your oncology team about these treatments to avoid interactions.
