Meet Dr Murphy

Dr Desmond Murphy qualified as a dentist in 1990 and became an orthodontist in 2008. He opened practices in Fish Hoek, Strand, and Hermanus. Dr Murphy is passionate about education, serving as a consultant for UWC’s orthodontics programme and as Chairman of the Rainbow Early Childhood Development Centre. He has also held leadership roles with the South African Society of Orthodontists and Bergvliet High School.

About Us

Located between the Silvermine mountain range and Fish Hoek Beach, Dr Murphy Orthodontics has been the preferred practice in the Deep South since 2008. Our clinic offers a warm, welcoming environment while maintaining professional care. We aim to provide a comfortable and efficient experience for all our patients.

Treatments

Removable Braces
Removable braces are ideal for younger patients or those requiring minor tooth movements. Worn for around 12-14 hours a day, these braces include:

• Functional Appliances: Full-time braces that stimulate jaw growth, requiring precise timing for treatment success.
• Removable Plates: These braces are used for minor adjustments or arch expansion and can be removed for easier cleaning.

Clear Braces
Clear braces are a series of removable, clear trays designed to gently move teeth into place. Worn 24/7, they are a comfortable, discreet, and effective treatment for a range of issues including crowding, overbites, underbites, and gaps. The removable nature of these braces makes oral hygiene easier than with fixed options, allowing for simpler brushing and flossing.

Fixed Braces
Fixed braces are permanently attached to the teeth and are ideal for patients with more complex orthodontic needs. We offer two options:

• Metal Braces: Made of stainless steel, these modern braces are smaller and more discreet than traditional versions, providing efficient treatment for a variety of cases.
• Ceramic Braces: Similar to metal braces but made of clear ceramic, these offer a more subtle appearance and are particularly suitable for teenagers who prefer a less noticeable option.

Oral Hygiene
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. We recommend brushing thoroughly twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist at least once a year. Proper oral care helps remove plaque and tartar, preventing dental caries, gum disease, and ensuring a fresh, healthy mouth throughout your treatment. Healthy gums and clean teeth contribute to the success of orthodontic treatment and your overall oral well-being.
