Dr James Urry Urologist Midrand – Expert in Urology and Robotic Surgery

Qualifications and Expertise

Dr James Urry Urologist Midrand brings extensive experience in urology, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted procedures. He earned a BSc(Hons) in Human Genetics and an MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand. Additionally, he completed his fellowship with the College of Urologists of South Africa (FCUrol SA) and obtained an MMed(Urol) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

To expand his expertise, he trained in laparoscopic and robotic surgery at Eastbourne District General Hospital in the United Kingdom. This advanced training equipped him with the latest surgical techniques in uro-oncology.

A Passion for Urology and Surgical Innovation

James grew up in Johannesburg and initially pursued a career in human genetics. However, during his medical training, urology quickly captured his interest. While completing his community service at Madadeni Hospital, he worked under the mentorship of Dr Andrzej Krysuik. This hands-on experience sparked a deep appreciation for the complexity and precision required in urology.

Shortly after, he relocated to Pietermaritzburg, where he joined Greys Hospital as a medical officer in urology. Over the next decade, he refined his skills under the guidance of Dr Marius Conradie. During this time, he also became the first urology registrar trained at Greys Hospital. His passion for endourology, uro-oncology, and minimally invasive procedures grew even stronger.

Advancing Urology Through Research and Innovation at Dr James Urry Urologist Midrand

Dr James Urry Urologist Midrand actively contributes to medical research. In collaboration with Dr Conradie, he co-authored a paper in the Journal of Endourology, highlighting innovative surgical techniques. He also completed his MMed research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on traumatic bladder injuries.

His commitment to excellence earned him recognition at the South African Urological Association Congress. In 2014, he received the prestigious Karl Storz Golden Cystoscope for his outstanding contributions to endourology.

Leading the Way in Robotic Surgery and Uro-Oncology

After qualifying as a specialist, James accepted a consultant position in urology at Greys Hospital. For four years, he led clinical teams, trained registrars, and supervised groundbreaking research projects. He later stepped into the role of acting head of department for 18 months, further shaping the hospital’s urology division.

Determined to refine his skills even further, he pursued a six-month fellowship in laparoscopic and robotic surgery in the UK. Working with the cystectomy and prostatectomy unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital, he quickly mastered robotic-assisted techniques. Through this experience, he not only perfected his skills but also discovered a strong passion for minimally invasive cancer treatment.
