Dr. Fanie Meyer is a psychiatrist based at Optima@RustenVrede Hospital, located just outside Stellenbosch. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria in the 1980s before working as a General Practitioner in Polokwane during the 1990s. He later specialized in Psychiatry at the University of the Free State, graduating in 2002.

Dr. Meyer has played a key role in the development of M-Care Optima Psychiatric Hospitals in Bloemfontein and Stellenbosch. As the Chief Executive Officer of Optima@RustenVrede, he oversees the clinic’s operations and ensures the delivery of high-quality care.

In addition to his work at the hospital, Dr. Meyer has served on various national councils, including the South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) and the Pain Society of South Africa (PAINSA). He is also a regular speaker at local, national, and international forums. Dr. Meyer’s academic interests focus on the Mind-Body interface, and he has delivered talks on topics such as chronic pain management, depression and anxiety, sleep disorders, obesity, and resilience, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The facility is one of the first in South Africa to offer in-patient care for children with emotional issues, where parents can stay alongside their children for a supportive and therapeutic program. The clinic features three specialized units: a Children’s Ward, a Teen Ward, and an Adult Ward, each equipped with 16 beds.

The clinic is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, paediatricians, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, dieticians, and physiotherapists. The environment is specifically designed to promote healing, with careful attention to the ward layout, furnishings, and therapeutic spaces.
