Dr Lynton Lurie Radiologist Specialist Rosebank graduated with an MB.BCh from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1980. He completed his internship in Medicine and Surgery at Johannesburg Hospital in 1981. Soon after, he served in the Radiology Department at No 1 Military Hospital Voortrekkerhoogte for two years.
Between 1983 and 1987, Dr Lurie trained as a radiology specialist at the University of Witwatersrand’s Academic Hospitals. In 1986, as a senior radiology registrar, he pioneered Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for kidney stone removal. That same year, he earned his Diagnostic Radiologist specialist degree, FFRad (D) SA.
In 1988, Dr Lurie joined the Diagnostic Radiology Practice at Milpark Hospital. By 1989, he became a full partner. His leadership grew further when he took on administrative responsibilities in 2001. By 2004, he had advanced to senior partner. At this stage, the radiology practice was known as Drs Haagensen and Lurie Inc.
Milpark Hospital housed a Level One Trauma Unit, a 24-hour casualty ward, and specialized medical units. These included a Cardiac and Renal Transplant Unit, a Respiratory Medicine Center, and a Neurosurgical Unit. Dr Lurie developed expertise in Trauma Radiology, NeuroRadiology, ICU imaging, and Respiratory Radiology. He also had a deep interest in Adult and Paediatric Uroradiology.
As a senior partner, Dr Lurie led advancements in radiology practice management. His expertise extended to hospital negotiations, medical aid agreements, and equipment acquisition. He played a key role in converting analogue X-ray departments to fully digital systems. His leadership ensured the successful implementation of PACS and RIS installations. He also introduced intra-operative MRI technology. To optimize PACS selection, he arranged a live, onsite comparative trial of different vendors at Milpark Hospital. Additionally, he served on the Physicians Advisory Board at Milpark Hospital.
In 2003, Dr Lurie married and started a family. By 2007, he stepped down from Milpark Radiology to embrace a new lifestyle. His sabbatical included Talmudic studies, forensic medicine training, and medical congress participation. He built a Mikvah, launched saproType (an online transcription service), and attended a Virtopsy course in Switzerland. He also contributed to MELISA by editing the Radiology Journal Watch.
Dr Lynton Lurie Radiologist Specialist Rosebank now serves as a part-time professional assistant radiologist at Dr Sulman and Partners. His dedication to radiology remains unwavering, and he continues to contribute to the medical field through his expertise and leadership.
