About Me
I am Sam, a Cape Town-based Counselling Psychologist. My journey into psychology began immediately after completing my schooling in Port Elizabeth. I was captivated by the discipline from the start. I earned my BPsych (Counselling) and MA (Counselling Psychology), both cum laude, from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
My first thesis explored adopted child-parent attachments, and I completed my initial internship at a special needs school. During my postgraduate studies, I worked with children and adults at the NMMU Community Psychology Clinic. My research focused on developmental and scholastic assessment in a special needs population of children.
My Experience in Therapy and Education
I gained invaluable experience working at the university’s Student Counselling and Career Centres, supporting young adults. After relocating to Cape Town, I became involved in various psychological services, including counselling, supervision, and lecturing within the higher education sector.
My passion for working in schools led me to become a psychologist at two of the United Herzlia Schools—Weizmann Primary and later Alon Ashel Pre-Primary. While still at Herzlia, I started a small private practice. By the end of 2019, I transitioned fully into private practice while continuing to contribute to higher education through lecturing, supervision, and academic material development.
Sam Pretorius Psychology Green Point – A Shift in Focus
In 2021, the pandemic shifted my focus from working with young children to older adolescents, university students, and young adults. While my initial interest lay in child psychology, I discovered a deep connection with this older population. Now, I work almost exclusively with adolescents and young adults.
To accommodate my growing practice, I modified my home, creating a private and comfortable space for my clients. My home-based practice now offers a separate entrance, ensuring a professional yet welcoming environment.
Life Outside of Psychology
On a personal note, I have been happily married for a decade and have two wonderful children, aged six and two. I cherish time spent outdoors with loved ones, making the most of the beautiful city I call home. In my free time, you’ll find me reading psychological thrillers, dining out, or going for walks. Some say I drink too much coffee and have a weakness for chocolate—but I have no regrets!
