Established over 40 years ago, The Parent Centre is a non-profit organisation based in Wynberg, Cape Town. Its mission is to empower parents with the skills and resources needed to raise resilient, well-balanced children. Initially founded as a project of the Cape Town Child Welfare Society, it soon evolved into a fully independent entity in 1997. Over the decades, The Parent Centre has been at the forefront of promoting positive parenting and child management practices through its world-class programmes and workshops.
The Centre collaborates with a variety of like-minded organisations to reach a wider audience and impact as many families as possible. By equipping parents and caregivers with the right tools, The Parent Centre plays a pivotal role in preventing child abuse, promoting emotional development, and fostering the well-being of both parents and children.
The Parent Centre offers a range of positive parenting workshops designed to help parents develop essential skills that enhance their children’s emotional well-being. These programmes cover topics such as child behaviour management, conflict resolution, parent-child communication, and building self-esteem. The goal is to create an environment in which children can thrive emotionally and socially.
For parents and caregivers who need additional support, The Parent Centre provides individual counselling sessions. These sessions focus on addressing challenges that parents may face, including anxiety, stress, relationship issues, and difficulties with child-rearing. The centre offers a safe and supportive space for parents to discuss their concerns and receive professional guidance.
The Parent Centre runs programmes aimed at promoting the safety and emotional development of children from conception to early adulthood. These programmes provide both parents and children with the tools to navigate life’s challenges and build resilience. Emphasis is placed on promoting healthy emotional development and preventing child neglect and abuse.
The Parent Centre also works towards promoting involved and nurturing motherhood and fatherhood. Specialised sessions are available for both mothers and fathers to encourage a balanced approach to parenting. These sessions empower parents to be more emotionally available and engaged with their children, fostering stronger family bonds.
In line with its mission to reach as many families as possible, The Parent Centre collaborates with various professionals, educational institutions, and other non-profit organisations. These partnerships enhance the Centre’s ability to deliver quality programmes and workshops, furthering its impact in the community.
As a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), The Parent Centre is guided by a strong set of principles that underpin its work:
People-centric: The Centre focuses on partnerships with other organisations to achieve a greater social impact.
Prudent financial management: The Centre has thrived for over four decades due to its effective financial practices and sustainable funding partnerships.
Inclusive approach: All services are impartial, ensuring that every family has access to the support they need.
The Parent Centre’s long-standing commitment to preventing child abuse and promoting healthy child development ensures that families receive the help and support they need to raise children who can thrive in society. With positive parenting at the heart of its services, the Centre continues to be a beacon of hope for families across Wynberg and beyond.
