Sam Keeley Psychotherapist Bradford. I specialize in psychotherapy for children, young people, and their families. I also work with adults, focusing particularly on men’s mental health.
having years of experience providing therapy for children in various settings. I use Theraplay® principles and integrate other therapy types such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I am a member of the British Psychological Society and the Theraplay® practicum.
For the past 15 years, I have dedicated myself to supporting both children and adults. My approach is always impartial and non-judgmental. I create a space where clients feel comfortable and can work at their own pace. This allows for steady progress.
As a father, I understand the importance of making therapy fun and engaging, especially for children. I ensure the therapy environment remains welcoming and happy for children and their caregivers. This creates a sense of security that helps children open up.
I use interventions informed by CBT, DBT, Theraplay®, and evidence-based approaches like PACE. These methods help children manage emotions, reduce anxiety, and build strong, healthy relationships.
I have supported children and adults therapeutically for over 15 years. This includes work within both community and secure settings. I have worked with children who have been fostered, adopted, or are in residential care. Before becoming a therapist, I conducted psychological research in secure hospitals, focusing on treatment effectiveness and the impact of living conditions on behavior.
Throughout my career, I have worked with clients facing challenges such as low self-esteem, trust issues, emotional regulation, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and ADHD. I have extensive experience supporting individuals with self-injury, suicidal behavior, depression, and trauma.
A significant part of my work involves Theraplay®. This approach is unique because it involves both the child and their caregiver(s) together. It focuses on play-based interaction rather than verbal communication. Theraplay® has proven to be especially effective for younger children. Research supports its ability to improve emotional regulation, attachment, and behavioral issues.
Theraplay® fosters trust and emotional connection, creating a positive atmosphere where children can thrive. It’s a dynamic way to address complex issues while building a strong therapeutic bond.
I am also deeply committed to research. I have published work on the impact of caregiving for children with complex needs. Currently, I am preparing to undertake a PhD on how to better support children transitioning from child to adult services. My work is always evidence-based and aligned with NICE guidelines, ensuring that I offer the best possible support to my clients.
I hold the following qualifications:
BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology
MSc Forensic Psychology
Various certifications in CBT, DBT, Theraplay®, and other key therapeutic techniques.
