The Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy was founded in September 1987 by Bob Cooke TSTA as the Lifestream Centre for Psychotherapy. Bob envisioned it as a safe space where individuals could receive expert care from skilled professionals in a confidential setting. This vision continues to guide the Institute’s mission today.
Initially, the centre had just two full-time therapists: Bob Cooke and June Brereton, along with part-time therapists. Over time, the Institute has expanded, but it has maintained its commitment to excellence. This foundation continues to shape the Institute’s reputation and approach to psychotherapy.
We offer a variety of therapeutic services to help individuals overcome emotional and psychological challenges. Our therapists are trained in different approaches, enabling them to tailor their methods to each client’s needs. Services include individual therapy, relationship therapy, and family therapy, focusing on issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship difficulties.
Our training programme is centred around Transactional Analysis (TA), an integrative therapeutic approach. We offer both introductory and advanced courses, which help practitioners gain the necessary skills and qualifications to become certified TA psychotherapists. We also provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities through workshops, seminars, and courses. These opportunities allow therapists to refine their practice and stay updated with the latest therapeutic techniques.
We provide clinical supervision for therapists, counsellors, and trainees. Our supervision sessions offer support to help practitioners enhance their skills and maintain high standards of care. These sessions aim to foster both professional development and personal growth for those working in therapeutic environments.
At the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy, we are committed to creating a respectful and inclusive environment. We follow anti-oppressive practices to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, feels valued and supported. We believe that personal growth drives positive change, both individually and in the wider community.
Whether you’re seeking therapy, training, or supervision, we offer a supportive space for growth and healing. Our therapists are dedicated to providing high-quality care to help you achieve your goals.
