Sam Pretorius – Clinical Psychologist – Claremont serves as Co-Director and Counselling Psychologist at Perspectives Psychology Group in Claremont, Cape Town. She earned her BPsych (Counselling) and MA in Counselling Psychology, both cum laude, from Nelson Mandela University. Early on, she worked at the NMU Community Psychology Clinic, supporting children and adults with diverse concerns. Moreover, she completed internships at the university’s Student Counselling and Career Centres, where she guided young adults through loss, trauma, mood shifts, and adjustment struggles.
In 2013, Mrs. Pretorius relocated to Cape Town. There, she counselled, supervised, and lectured within higher-education settings. Consequently, she also launched a small private practice while teaching at a primary school. By 2020, she focused primarily on adult clients. As a result, she deepened her expertise in adult mental health and group facilitation. Furthermore, she thrives within multidisciplinary teams and hospital-linked programmes, integrating psychological and physical health care.
Her therapeutic style blends systems theory, person-centred, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural approaches. Additionally, she holds Level 3 EMDR certification, which she applies to trauma-focused work. Her practice rests on unconditional positive regard, compassion, and evidence-based methods. Consequently, clients experience a supportive space where their unique needs guide each session.
Individual Therapy

She applies Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) at Level 3, helping clients process and integrate traumatic experiences safely.
Adolescent Support
Although her focus now lies with adults, she retains expertise in adolescent mental health, especially around academic stress, identity development, and emotional regulation.
Workshops & Group Sessions
She designs and facilitates group workshops that promote resilience, coping strategies, and peer support through interactive exercises.
Teletherapy Services
She offers secure video consultations, ensuring that remote or busy clients maintain continuity of care without compromise.
At Perspectives Psychology Group, Mrs. Pretorius leads weekly multidisciplinary case reviews with psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and social workers. Furthermore, she co-facilitates an adolescent resilience programme that equips youth with structured, evidence-based modules.
The practice features modern therapy suites, a dedicated group lounge, and advanced digital assessment tools, such as biofeedback devices and mood-tracking apps. As a result, she monitors progress precisely and adapts plans dynamically. Moreover, she trains and mentors junior clinicians in ethical practice and evidence-based methods, which sustains high standards across the team.
Mrs. Pretorius continually reviews the latest research to refine her interventions. Consequently, she provides cutting-edge care that evolves with emerging best practices. Finally, she invites families to join psychoeducational workshops, reinforcing client gains and promoting long-term wellbeing.
