Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Erich Mennen leads the Upper Limb and Trauma unit at Mediclinic Kloof in Erasmuskloof, Pretoria East. He earned his MBChB in 1994 and his MMed (Orthopaedics) in 2002 from the University of Pretoria. Moreover, Dr Mennen holds fellowship status with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and he served as President of the South African Society for Surgery of the Hand from 2013 to 2015. Consequently, he blends decades of specialist training with leadership in hand-surgery education.
Early in his career, Dr Mennen refined his skills managing complex hand, elbow, and shoulder conditions. Furthermore, he has treated more than 15 000 patients with upper-limb disorders, ranging from traumatic injuries to degenerative diseases. Therefore, his patient-centred approach—emphasising clear communication and shared decision-making—ensures that each individual understands their diagnosis and treatment plan.
Dr Mennen offers a comprehensive suite of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative treatments, each tailored to restore function and relieve pain:
Trauma & Fracture Fixation:
Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for distal radius, scaphoid, and phalangeal fractures.
External fixation for unstable wrist and complex hand traumas.
Tendon & Nerve Reconstruction:
Primary tendon repair with micro-suture techniques for flexor and extensor injuries.
Nerve grafting and transfers to restore sensation and motor function in nerve-injured limbs.
Arthritis Management & Joint Reconstruction:
Arthroplasty and arthrodesis for osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint and interphalangeal joints.
Synovectomy and joint debridement for rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory arthropathies.
Congenital & Paediatric Hand Surgery:
Correction of syndactyly, polydactyly, and congenital deformities using precise flap and Z-plasty techniques.
Clubhand release with tendon transfers to improve function.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS):
Sympathetic nerve blocks and neuromodulation paired with occupational therapy.
Soft-Tissue Tumours & Lesions:
Excision of ganglion cysts, lipomas, and mucosal lesions with reconstructive flap coverage as needed.
Mediclinic Kloof features a dedicated hand-surgery suite equipped with high-resolution fluoroscopy, digital radiography, and a microsurgical instrument set. Moreover, day-surgery protocols allow many procedures to proceed without overnight admission, thereby reducing hospital-acquired risks.
Dr Mennen leads a multidisciplinary team of hand therapists, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists. Consequently, patients receive coordinated care—from detailed preoperative assessment through structured rehabilitation plans. Furthermore, the practice offers telehealth follow-ups for postoperative monitoring and therapy adjustments, which saves travel time and enhances continuity.
Each quarter, Dr Mennen hosts patient-education workshops on injury prevention, arthritis management, and postoperative care. Therefore, the community benefits from practical strategies to maintain hand health. Finally, if you seek expert, compassionate care for hand, wrist, or elbow conditions—backed by advanced technology and a personalised approach—schedule your consultation today with Dr Erich Mennen at Mediclinic Kloof to restore your function and quality of life.
