Dr Allie du Toit – Orthopaedic Surgeon – Brackenfell practices at Mediclinic Cape Gate. He earned his MBChB from the University of Stellenbosch in 1999 and subsequently obtained his MMed (Orth) with distinction in 2008. Moreover, he achieved his FCS Orth (SA) fellowship certification the same year . Early in his career, Dr du Toit contributed to pioneering research on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, which subsequently improved patient outcomes in joint replacement.
He then completed a dedicated arthroplasty fellowship programme, focusing on hip and knee replacements, under leading mentors in South Africa. Consequently, he developed sub-specialist expertise in primary and revision arthroplasty, as well as complex trauma reconstruction. Furthermore, he co-founded a regional OrthoTrauma unit, delivering 24-hour emergency orthopaedic cover across the Cape Peninsula . Thus, he blends academic rigour with surgical innovation to restore mobility for a diverse patient population.
Transitioning seamlessly between cutting-edge technology and compassionate care, Dr du Toit incorporates 3D pre-operative planning, robotic-assisted surgery, and a fully digital workflow. As a result, he ensures precision and reproducibility in every procedure. Moreover, he regularly presents at national and international conferences and mentors junior surgeons through hands-on workshops, thereby fostering the next generation of orthopaedic experts.
Primary & Revision Hip Arthroplasty: utilising the direct anterior approach for minimal muscle disruption and rapid mobilisation.
Knee Replacement Surgery: employing robotic and computer-guided systems to optimise implant alignment and longevity.
Shoulder & Elbow Reconstruction: advanced techniques for rotator cuff repair, instability management, and arthroplasty.
Trauma Orthopaedics: acute fracture management with locking plates, intramedullary nailing, and external fixation for high-energy injuries.
Foot & Ankle Surgery: corrective procedures for deformities, tendon repairs, and fusions using minimally invasive osteotomies.
Revision Joint Surgery: complex re-implantation with custom implants and autogenous bone grafting for challenging cases.
Arthroscopic Procedures: keyhole interventions for meniscal repair, ligament reconstruction, and synovectomy under high-definition visualization.
3D Imaging & Diagnostics: cone-beam CT, MRI, and patient-specific surgical guides to create bespoke operative plans.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS): multimodal analgesia, early mobilisation, and tailored nutritional support.
After-Hours Emergency Cover: rapid-response orthopaedic care across Mediclinic Cape Gate and partner hospitals.
Mediclinic Cape Gate provides state-of-the-art operating theatres equipped with real-time navigation systems, high-definition imaging, and dedicated robotic platforms. Moreover, Dr du Toit leads a multidisciplinary team of anaesthetists, physiotherapists, pain specialists, and specialist nurses to coordinate perioperative care . Consequently, patients benefit from seamless support from preadmission assessment through outpatient rehabilitation.
He emphasises clear, compassionate communication at every step, ensuring that patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and expected recovery pathways. Furthermore, he adheres strictly to aseptic protocols and infection-control standards to maximise safety and comfort. Additionally, he offers telemedicine follow-ups, which enhance accessibility for home-bound or remote patients. Thus, he maintains continuity of care beyond hospital discharge.
