Dr Johann Riedemann – Oncologist (Radiation Oncologist) – Cape Gate practices at the Cancercare Cape Gate Oncology Centre, where he directs precision radiotherapy and integrated molecular oncology services. He earned his MBChB from the University of Stellenbosch in 2012 and subsequently completed his Fellowship in Radiation Oncology (FC Rad Onc SA) in 2020. Moreover, he holds an MSc in Molecular Oncology and pursued a PhD/post-doctoral fellowship focused on tumour biology, blending bench research with bedside care .
During his early career, Dr Riedemann served as a clinical research fellow and registrar at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals, where he honed expertise in paediatric and adolescent brain tumours. Consequently, he brings over a decade of specialist experience to every treatment plan. Furthermore, he sits on regional guideline committees and mentors junior clinicians, ensuring that emerging radiotherapy techniques—such as Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)—are adopted locally. Thus, patients benefit from cutting-edge, evidence-driven care.
Precision Radiotherapy: including IMRT, VMAT, and Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) to deliver high-dose treatment with millimetre accuracy.
Stereotactic Radiosurgery & SBRT: single-fraction or hypofractionated protocols for brain metastases, lung, and liver lesions, maximising tumour control.
Brachytherapy: high-dose internal radiation for gynaecologic, prostate, and skin cancers using intracavitary and interstitial techniques.
Paediatric & Adolescent Oncology: tailored fractionation schedules, child-friendly sedation protocols, and multidisciplinary support for young patients.
Molecular & Targeted Therapy Integration: coordination of checkpoint inhibitors, tyrosine-kinase inhibitors, and radiotherapy to harness synergistic effects.
Palliative Radiotherapy: symptom-relief regimens for bone metastases, spinal cord compression, and tumour-related pain.
Treatment Planning & Dosimetry: advanced 3D-CT and MRI fusion with Monte Carlo dose calculation for optimal safety margins.
Clinical Trial Access: opportunities to enrol in protocols evaluating novel radiopharmaceuticals and immuno-oncology agents.
Tele-Oncology Consultations: virtual follow-up for treatment response monitoring and side-effect management.
Survivorship & Rehabilitation: coordinated care with dietitians, physiotherapists, and counsellors to address long-term wellness.
Cancercare’s Cape Gate unit provides a holistic oncology environment, featuring dedicated counselling rooms, genetic-testing capabilities, and on-site support groups. Moreover, Dr Riedemann leads a multidisciplinary tumour board—including medical oncologists, surgeons, radiographers, oncology nurses, and dietitians—to tailor each care pathway. Consequently, patients receive seamless coordination from diagnosis through survivorship.
He emphasises compassionate communication, ensuring that individuals and families understand treatment goals, potential side effects, and expected outcomes. Furthermore, he adheres strictly to rigorous quality-assurance protocols and infection-control standards, thereby maximising both safety and comfort. He also contributes to community education through public lectures and digital content on brain health and cancer prevention.
