The Anesthesiology Amsterdam UMC Anesthesiology VUmc Amsterdam department leads in university‑level anesthesia and perioperative care. We cover cardiac, neuro, and pediatric programs at the VUmc site. We work with over 25 staff anesthesiologists and more than 40 residents. Our scientific research plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes.

Our Mission in Perioperative Care

We provide anesthesia services in the operating room and deliver intensive care medicine and emergency stabilization for trauma patients.

What We Do

• Administer anesthesia for all surgical procedures.

• Monitor vital functions using both invasive and non‑invasive methods.

• Support heart surgery (cardio‑anesthesia), neurological surgery and pediatric anesthesia.

• Provide epidural labor pain relief and therapeutic nerve blocks.

• Treat chronic pain and offer palliative care.

Education and Training Programmes

Residents follow a five‑year programme and  train in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and intensive care. They complete a pain relief internship. They also conduct scientific research and present their findings. We focus on both theory and hands‑on practice.

We partner with research institutes including EMGO+, ICaR‑VU, and MOVE. Our work aims to enhance both academic and clinical care.

Patient Pathway & Preoperative Process

Before surgery, patients visit Preoperative Screening. We assess health to reduce risk during surgery. If required, we refer patients to specialists for optimization. During surgery, anesthesiologists monitor and maintain vital functions. After surgery, we manage pain and support recovery.
