About Us

Cape Mental Health Centre Observatory celebrates over 110 years of service in Cape Town. We are committed to challenging socially restrictive and discriminatory practices that affect mental health. Our work rests on quality, excellence and professionalism at all times. Our slogan “all about ability” reflects how we recognise and nurture the abilities of our service-users, our staff and our volunteers. We see possibilities where some may only see challenges. We focus on ABILITY rather than DISABILITY.

What We Do

We provide a range of community-based services for persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities. Our programmes include:

• Assessment, referral, counselling and support for individuals with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.

• Special education care centres for children with severe or profound intellectual disability.

• Skills training and work opportunities for youth and adults with intellectual disability.

• Psychosocial rehabilitation and peer support interventions for persons living with psychosocial disability.

• Advocacy initiatives, training courses and community awareness programmes to raise awareness about mental disability and remove the barriers of stigma and discrimination that hinder recovery, inclusion and empowerment.
