Community Mental Health and Psychiatry Foundation Cape Town provides psychiatric rehabilitation services across the greater Cape Town and Boland area.
CMHP focuses on long-term care and group homes for people with psychiatric diagnoses. It uses Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles to guide care. As a result, clients receive support that helps them live more stable and independent lives. The foundation currently supports more than 300 clients across different housing and care facilities.
CMHP offers long-term housing in a range of settings. These include community-based homes, urban facilities, and a frail care centre. Each setting provides a safe and structured space. In addition, trained staff help clients manage daily routines.
The organisation employs over 110 staff members. These team members assist with daily care and support. They help clients with basic needs, routines, and personal care. Furthermore, they build strong relationships with clients. This helps improve trust and emotional well-being.
CMHP runs a community mental health clinic at the old Stikland Hospital site. This clinic offers accessible care to many clients. In addition, CMHP operates satellite clinics in other facilities. These clinics make it easier for clients to receive care closer to where they live.
Because of this setup, clients do not need to travel far for treatment. They can access consistent support within their own communities. This approach improves both convenience and continuity of care.
CMHP uses a multidisciplinary team to deliver care. This team includes social workers, occupational therapists, nurses, and support staff. Each professional plays an important role in the client’s journey.
Together, they create personalised care plans. These plans address mental, physical, and social needs. As a result, clients receive well-rounded support. This team approach also ensures better communication and improved outcomes.
CMHP also runs a Community Mental Health Academy. This academy trains caregivers through one-year and two-year courses. These courses prepare caregivers with the right skills and knowledge.
In addition, CMHP works with the Department of Health and the Department of Social Development. It also partners with the Help Your Neighbour Fund. Through these partnerships, CMHP offers partial financial support to clients who cannot afford full fees. This makes care more accessible to those in need.
