About Cornel Verwey Clinical Psychologist Brackenfell

Cornel Verwey Clinical Psychologist Brackenfell provides mental health support to teenagers and adults facing a range of challenges. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). In 2008, she completed her clinical internship at the Fort Napier Psychiatric Complex in Pietermaritzburg. Her training also included placements at various community clinics and Town Hill Psychiatric Hospital. As a result, she gained experience in different mental health care settings.

During her community service year, Cornel managed the Northdale Hospital Psychology Clinic in Pietermaritzburg. She later built a private practice in Brackenfell. There, she creates a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space for therapy. She also has a strong interest in trauma work. Previously, she shared her expertise with the Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Therapeutic Approach

Cornel uses a mainly psychodynamic approach. This approach looks at how past experiences can affect present behaviour, attitudes, and emotions. However, she also uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness techniques when these approaches can benefit the client.

She values the therapeutic alliance between therapist and client. Therefore, she sees therapy as an active partnership. She believes that a strong professional relationship can play an important role in therapy success. Clients can explore difficult questions, deal with past trauma, and find new ways to manage challenges.

Services Offered by Cornel Verwey Clinical Psychologist Brackenfell

Individual Therapy

Cornel provides individual therapy for teenagers and adults. Her support includes trauma recovery, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss, stress management, relationship difficulties, and personal growth.

She helps clients work through past traumatic experiences. She also provides coping strategies for depression and anxiety. In addition, she supports clients through grief, work-related stress, life changes, and personal or professional relationship difficulties. Therapy can also support self-exploration and emotional development.

Therapeutic Techniques

Cornel uses several therapeutic methods. These include Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Practices, and Attachment Theory. These methods can help clients understand past experiences, manage symptoms, stay grounded, reduce stress, and explore early relationship patterns.

Collaboration with Wilma Beukes Clinical Psychology Practice

Cornel works closely with the Wilma Beukes Clinical Psychology Practice in Kuils River. The practice provides additional specialised services, including assessments and diagnosis, media psycho-educational services, Christian-based psychotherapy, creative therapies, and trauma-focused work.

Family and Couple Therapy

While Cornel mainly offers individual therapy, the Wilma Beukes practice provides family and couple services. These include conflict management, assertiveness training, and systemic family therapy. These services help families and couples manage disputes, build communication skills, improve self-confidence, and work on family dynamics.

Mental Health Awareness and Educational Services

Cornel and her colleagues also support mental health awareness. They provide school presentations, lectures, workshops, and media engagements. These services offer professional development and community education. Their media work includes articles, interviews, and presentations in both English and Afrikaans.

Diagnostic Interviews for Social and Communication Disorders

The practice also provides specialist assessments. These assessments help determine whether social anxiety may relate to an underlying autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing challenges. The process aims to provide clarity and guide suitable therapeutic interventions.

What to Expect from Therapy with Cornel Verwey Clinical Psychologist Brackenfell

Therapy sessions generally last 60 minutes and take place once a week. Cornel begins with an assessment phase. During this phase, she works with clients to identify difficulties and set therapy goals. She also gathers relevant background information so she can tailor the therapy process.

Therapy Structure:

  • Assessment Phase: Identifying challenges and setting goals.
  • Therapeutic Phase: Working towards agreed objectives through regular sessions.
  • Flexibility: When goals are less defined, therapy can remain open-ended and adaptive.

Cornel provides a thoughtful and personalised therapy experience. She aims to help clients feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their therapy journey.
