Coryn Katz physiotherapist Diep River is a skilled physiotherapist who works in both traditional and aquatic physiotherapy.
Coryn holds a Bachelor of Science Physiotherapy Degree from the University of Cape Town, which she completed in 2002. During her time in the United States on a tennis scholarship, she also achieved strong academic results. After graduating Magna Cum Laude, she earned a place in the “Who’s Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges in America”.
After returning to South Africa, Coryn completed her community service year at Red Cross Children’s Hospital in 2003. Since then, she has completed many advanced courses. In 2021, she earned a Post-Graduate Diploma in Pain Management from the University of Cape Town, graduating with distinction. In 2022, she completed the Advanced Neuromuscular Skeletal (ANMS) course through Wits University.
Coryn has a strong passion for aquatic physiotherapy. She is one of the few qualified Watsu practitioners in South Africa and trained under Peggy Schoedinger. She also studied advanced aquatic techniques in Switzerland under aquatic physiotherapy pioneers Johan Lambeck and Urs Gamper.
As a result, Coryn has a strong interest in helping people recover from chronic and acute pain. She specialises in neuro-musculoskeletal conditions and uses advanced clinical reasoning skills.
Coryn designed and helped build a unique aquatic physiotherapy centre around each client’s needs. The centre is fully wheelchair accessible. It also has an electric hoist to help clients with severe disabilities.
Aquatic physiotherapy uses the support of water to reduce pressure on joints. Therefore, it can help clients recover from injury or surgery and improve their overall function. Coryn creates personalised treatment plans for each person.
Aquatic therapy can support rehabilitation after surgery or injury. It can also help with mobility issues and recovery after operations. Furthermore, Coryn helps manage chronic and acute pain. Water therapy offers a calming setting for conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic back pain.
Aquatic physiotherapy can support neurological rehabilitation for Parkinson’s, strokes, traumatic brain injuries and Multiple Sclerosis. It can help improve balance, coordination and mobility, which may support greater independence and quality of life.
It also supports orthopaedic rehabilitation after hip, knee or shoulder surgery and for degenerative spinal conditions. The treatment can help restore strength, flexibility and mobility while reducing weight-bearing.
For sport injuries, aquatic physiotherapy provides a way to recover without placing undue stress on the body. It can help with injuries such as tennis elbow and sprained ankles, while supporting recovery and helping prevent reinjury.
Coryn also works with post-natal mothers who want to regain their strength. Her therapy can also benefit individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Water therapy provides a calming setting for physical and emotional recovery.
Aquatic therapy can help patients recovering from heart conditions improve cardiovascular fitness and overall health. Its low-impact nature makes water-based exercise suitable for those recovering from cardiac issues.
The purpose-built centre provides a comfortable, supportive and professional setting. Its wheelchair access and electric hoist allow even severely disabled clients to enter the pool safely.
Coryn takes a complete approach to rehabilitation. Her background includes pain management, neuromuscular skeletal treatment and aquatic therapy. She focuses on both the physical and emotional sides of recovery.
Her passion for sports also supports her work. Coryn enjoys tennis, marathon running and Ironman triathlons. Therefore, she understands the challenges of injury recovery and remains committed to helping each client reach an optimal level of function.
