“David Trappler Psychiatrist Tamboerskloof offers a dual approach that supports both medication management and deeper self-understanding through psychotherapy.”
I studied medicine at Wits University in Johannesburg from 1972 to 1977. After that, I completed my housemanship and Senior Housemanship at Baragwanath Hospital. These early years gave me strong clinical experience and a solid base in patient care.
Then, in 1980, I worked as a medical officer at Guys Hospital in London in the United Kingdom. During that time, I also worked on the British protectorate islands of Tristan da Cunha and St Helena in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. As a result, I gained wide and unique medical experience in different settings.
In 1981, I started my registrar training in psychiatry at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. I focused on developing my skills in mental health care and patient support. Soon after, I qualified as a specialist psychiatrist in 1985.
After qualifying, I worked as a consultant in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town Medical School for two years. This role helped me grow my knowledge even further. Then, in 1987, I started my private practice.
I use a dual approach in my work. On the one hand, I carefully monitor medication needs. On the other hand, I guide my patients through psychotherapy so they can better understand themselves. Because of this, patients receive both medical support and emotional insight.
In addition, I trained as a Jungian Analyst and became a founding member of SAAJA in 1994. I am also registered with the IAAP in Zurich. This background allows me to bring depth and meaning into my therapeutic work.
I work as a general psychiatrist and psycho-analyst. My practice is based in the City Bowl of Cape Town. I focus on helping patients understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. At the same time, I ensure that their medical treatment stays on track.
Furthermore, I aim to create a safe and supportive space for every patient. This helps them explore their inner world with confidence.
I combine many years of medical training with deep psychological insight. Therefore, patients benefit from a balanced and thoughtful approach. I also adapt my methods to suit each individual. This ensures that every patient receives care that fits their needs.
