I’m Deidre, a wife, mother of three beautiful girls, and a passionate midwife committed to empowering parents with the knowledge they need for a positive birth experience. Early in my nursing education, I realized midwifery was where my heart belonged. Whether influenced by my late mother, who was also a midwife, or simply my natural calling, I knew this profession was my true purpose.

Gaining Hands-On Experience in Government and Private Maternity Units

After completing my nursing studies, I immediately began working in a government maternity unit. This was a defining experience for me, as I managed complicated births with limited resources. Subsequently, I moved to Johannesburg and worked in several private hospital maternity units. This shift opened my eyes to the medical model of childbirth. However, I also saw how many mothers in private practice made uninformed decisions. These decisions often led to unnecessary caesareans, driven more by convenience than medical need. This experience truly opened my eyes to the need for better-informed choices, and it ignited a fire in me to make a difference.

Informed Choices: The Key to a Positive Birth Experience

Working in an active childbirth unit reinforced my belief in natural birth. Here, I saw how allowing birth to unfold naturally, with minimal interventions, led to better outcomes for both mothers and babies. In fact, I witnessed the power of informed decisions firsthand. I realized that when women are empowered with knowledge, they can make confident choices about their childbirth experiences. I firmly believe that when the body is allowed to do what it was designed to do, the process will unfold smoothly. Therefore, I focus on educating parents, helping them understand their options, and giving them the confidence to make the best decisions for themselves.

Education and Knowledge: Ensuring Parents Make Informed Decisions

In 2012, I completed a postgraduate degree in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatology, which deepened my understanding and commitment to supporting families. Armed with this knowledge, I became even more passionate about helping parents navigate their pregnancies. During my years of practice, I noticed that many parents had fears and uncertainties, especially in the early stages of pregnancy. These fears often led to regretful decisions later on. For this reason, I decided to dedicate my career to helping parents gain the knowledge they need to make informed, confident decisions.

A Spiritual Calling: Blessing Every Baby Born Deidre Nel Midwife Randburg

My journey took a spiritual turn about ten years ago at a religious camp, where I had a revelation and was baptized. I now see midwifery as more than just a job; it is a divine privilege. Assisting in the birth of a new soul is a blessing. I realized that every birth is a gift from God, and I consider it my duty to give thanks for this blessing. Since then, I have made it a practice to anoint every baby whose parents agree, acknowledging the sacredness of the moment.
