Description
Dr Ilze Fourie Oncology Cape Gate
Who We Are
Dr Ilze Fourie Oncology Cape Gate is dedicated to providing exceptional cancer treatment. Our practice was founded by Dr. Alma van der Merwe, a medical oncologist, in 1991. Initially, chemotherapy was the primary treatment modality. However, radiotherapy was introduced in 2000 when Dr. Anna-Marie Visser joined the team. Since then, the practice has expanded, with Dr. George Loots (2007), Dr. Ilze Fourie (2018), and Dr. Louis Cordier (2021) strengthening our expertise.
Our Practices at Dr Ilze Fourie Oncology Cape Gate
We operate from two locations: 17 Solway Street in Bellville and the Cape Gate Oncology Centre in Kraaifontein. Additionally, we utilize radiotherapy units at Panorama, Rondebosch, and N1 City. Consequently, we offer a full range of external radiotherapy techniques, including brachytherapy, ensuring comprehensive cancer care.
Our Approach to Cancer Treatment at Dr Ilze Fourie Oncology Cape Gate
At Dr Ilze Fourie Cape Gate, we believe in a multidisciplinary approach. Our patients benefit from a collaborative effort where oncologists, surgeons, gynecologists, urologists, radiologists, pathologists, and social workers contribute to treatment plans. Consequently, this ensures the best possible care tailored to each patient’s needs.
Advanced Radiotherapy Techniques
Radiotherapy uses high-energy X-rays to target cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Various advanced techniques enhance precision and effectiveness:
- Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT): This method delivers radiation with varying beam intensity to precisely target tumors.
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT): A refined form of IMRT where the radiation beam continuously moves around the patient.
- Stereotactic Radiotherapy: Focused radiation beams treat small, well-defined tumors with high precision in a shorter timeframe.
Brachytherapy – Internal Radiation Therapy
Brachytherapy involves placing small radioactive sources near or inside tumors. This localized treatment delivers effective radiation while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Radioactive Iodine Therapy
This treatment targets thyroid cancer using a radioactive tablet that selectively destroys cancerous cells. Patients remain in isolation for a short period to ensure safety before being discharged.
Palliative Care – Enhancing Quality of Life
For patients with advanced cancer, palliative care provides relief from symptoms and enhances well-being. This includes:
- Active treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- Best supportive care, including pain management, psychosocial support, and oxygen therapy.
- A multidisciplinary approach, involving doctors, nurses, and social workers to ensure holistic patient care.
