Dr. Jasper van Zyl – Psychiatrist grew up in Gansbaai and completed his matric at Hermanus High School in 2006. He pursued his medical degree at Stellenbosch University’s Tygerberg campus and graduated with an MBChB in 2012. During his time in medical school, Dr. Van Zyl developed a strong passion for psychiatry and the holistic treatment of individuals facing mental health challenges.

After completing a two-year internship in Pietermaritzburg, where he rotated through several medical and surgical specialties, Dr. Van Zyl spent a year in Vredendal on the West Coast as a community service doctor. This experience fostered a deep love for this region. Following his community service, Dr. Van Zyl worked in the psychiatry department at Worcester Provincial Hospital, where he completed his Diploma in Mental Health. It was during this time that he decided to specialize in psychiatry.

Dr. Van Zyl then worked as a general practitioner and district surgeon in various small towns across South Africa, including Vanrhynsdorp and Jan Kempdorp. His passion for psychiatry continued to grow, and he was accepted to specialize in psychiatry at the University of Cape Town. Here, he gained invaluable experience, rotating through hospitals like Groote Schuur, Valkenberg, and Red Cross Children’s Hospital. After completing his training and graduating as a psychiatrist, Dr. Van Zyl worked as a consultant at Lentegeur Hospital before transitioning into private practice.

Dr. Van Zyl has a special interest in treating anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and complex psychiatric patients requiring careful medication management. Outside of his work, he enjoys reading non-fiction books, writing poetry, listening to music, and spending time with his family. He has a keen interest in contemporary South African art and loves traveling to different parts of South Africa.
