Dr Raoul Scholtz Ophthalmologist Claremont specializes in vitreoretinal surgery, ocular oncology, cataract surgery, and the management of diabetic eye disease. With a vast and varied medical background, he provides exceptional care to his patients, applying advanced techniques and years of experience in eye care.
Raoul was born and raised in Cradock, Eastern Cape. He completed his schooling at Kingswood College in Grahamstown before pursuing his medical degree at the University of Cape Town, where he graduated in 1981. Afterward, he spent seven years in general medicine, including a Diploma in Paediatrics at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.
Dr Raoul Scholtz Ophthalmologist Claremont completed his specialist training in Ophthalmology as a registrar at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, earning his FCS (SA) in Ophthalmology in 1992. Following this, he worked as a consultant, focusing on the Retinal Clinic and Ocular Oncology Clinic. Initially serving full-time, he later moved to part-time consulting, where he continued to contribute significantly to the field.
Dr Scholtz has participated in numerous clinical trials and is an active member of the South African Vitreo-retinal Society. He has contributed to the organization of both the OSSA congress and the Gonin Club Congress in Cape Town. In 2018, he co-presented papers at the SAVRS meeting, discussing Choroidal Melanoma and Birdshot Chorioretinopathy. He also serves on the SA Vitreoretinal Society Academic Advisory Committee, contributing to the development of clinical protocols.
Dr Raoul Scholtz Ophthalmologist Claremont is a member of the European Society of Retinal Specialists and regularly attends international meetings and ocular oncology workshops. He is also a member of the Cape Town Ocular Oncology Service and is listed on the Eyecancernetwork website.
He is a founding member of both the Peninsula Eye Clinic and the Life Peninsula Eye Hospital, where he operates and has served on the hospital board for many years.
Outside of his professional career, Dr Scholtz is passionate about outdoor activities. He is an avid trail runner, mountaineer, and cyclist, often accompanied by his wife, Ruth. He has a daughter, Natalie, a Speech Therapist in Cape Town, and a son, Benjamin, a Mechatronics Engineer and software developer.
Dr Scholtz is also the only ophthalmologist in the world who has performed an appendicectomy under local anaesthetic in Antarctica!
