Dr Steven Lapere Ophthalmologist Claremont specializes in retinal disorders and cataract surgery. With extensive training and international experience, he provides expert diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of eye conditions.
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, he completed his medical degree at the University of the Free State in 2006. His early medical career included a two-year internship at Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex and a year of community service at Kimberley Hospital, where he also earned a Diploma in Anaesthetics.
Dr Lapere’s ophthalmology journey began at Mankweng Eye Unit in Limpopo, where he worked as a medical officer and obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology. He then gained further experience as a senior house officer at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter, UK. During this time, he developed a deep passion for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders.
His specialist training took place at Groote Schuur Hospital through the University of Cape Town. To further refine his expertise, he completed a two-year fellowship in Surgical Retina, Medical Retina, and Ocular Oncology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Canada (2015-2017).

When he’s not treating patients, Dr Lapere enjoys cycling, hiking, and kitesurfing. Cape Town’s natural beauty provides the perfect setting for these activities throughout the year. He is married to Cherese Lapere, an anaesthetics registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital.
