Description
Dr Terri Henderson Psychiatrist Kenilworth
I am Dr Terri Henderson Psychiatrist Kenilworth. I am a Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist based in Kenilworth, Cape Town. I care for children, teens and young adults. I focus on mental health issues in younger people.
About me
I trained at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for my MBChB degree. Then I specialised in psychiatry at several hospitals including Valkenberg Hospital, Lentegeur Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital. After that I completed my child and adolescent psychiatry training at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. Since 2011 I have worked only with children and adolescents. I also worked as a GP and even as a “bush‑doctor” in a game reserve. That time gave me a deep view of community health needs.
What I do
I assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions in older children, tweens, teens and young adults. I treat many conditions: Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Eating Disorders, Gender Dysphoria, OCD, Self‑harm, Suicidality and more. I care deeply about each child’s unique needs. I focus especially on early detection. Early care can change a young person’s life and support their family too.
When you come for an assessment, I meet with your child and parents (together, then sometimes separately as needed). I listen first. I gather history, school reports or any documents you bring. Then I build a treatment plan with you. Plans may include medicine (when needed), referral to counselling or therapy, family sessions, or help from other specialists such as dietitians or social workers. If required, I coordinate with schools or arrange inpatient care under supervision.
My mission
I feel strongly about mental health awareness for children and teens. I regularly give talks in schools, do media interviews, or run education sessions. I want to help people understand youth mental health. I also wrote a book, “Let’s Talk Teen,” to help teens and parents learn about mental health issues in adolescence. The book gives practical advice and helps families feel less alone when challenges arise.
Why I believe in early care
Many mental health problems start young. If we wait too long, they can affect school, family, friendships, and self‑esteem. I see the difference early support can make. I support young people with care, and I guide families with kindness and respect. I treat each case as unique. I also keep up with new knowledge in child psychiatry to offer care based on the latest insights.
What to expect when you contact me
When you call or email to book, we set up an initial meeting. At that meeting I give time to listen and understand. Then I explain what I see, and together we decide on a plan. I explain options simply. I answer questions clearly. I ensure you understand your child’s needs and how we can work together.
