Welcome to FirstLight Counselling and Psychotherapy in Bath. My name is Guy Polkinghorne, and I have been dedicated to supporting people through personal challenges since 2001. As a fully qualified counsellor, I hold a Diploma in Person-Centered Counselling, which provides me with the knowledge and tools to help clients navigate their difficulties in a safe, effective, and compassionate way.
I have spent 25 years working with people across various sectors, from Human Resources to business coaching, and have supported children, adolescents, and adults in their personal growth. Over the years, my approach has evolved, and I am now a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), ensuring that I adhere to the highest professional standards. I also appear on the BACP’s Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
Having spent time helping individuals rebuild their confidence after job loss and guiding people to understand their skills and passions, I understand the importance of building self-awareness and a strong sense of identity. My career has always focused on helping others thrive, and I continue to do so through counselling.
At FirstLight Counselling and Psychotherapy, I offer a supportive, confidential space where you can explore your concerns, gain insights into your behaviours, and begin the process of healing and self-improvement. I work with individuals from all walks of life and with a wide range of personal issues. Some of the areas I specialise in include:
Personal Development – Explore your personal challenges and work through them at your own pace.
Anxiety and Stress – Learn how to manage stress and address the root causes of anxiety.
Depression – Support in overcoming feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
Self-Esteem and Confidence Building – Improve your self-worth and unlock your potential.
Relationship Issues – Address difficulties in both personal and professional relationships.
Career Challenges – Work through issues related to career changes, job loss, or professional development.
Trauma and Childhood Issues – Understand how past experiences impact your present life and work towards healing.
Grief and Loss – Support for coping with bereavement and significant life changes.
Addiction and Behavioural Issues – Work on breaking unhelpful habits and building healthier behaviours.
Whether you’re struggling with a specific issue or looking for general emotional support, I tailor each session to your individual needs. My person-centred approach ensures that we focus on what is most relevant to you, allowing you to feel heard and supported throughout the process.
Choosing the right counsellor or psychotherapist is a vital decision. I understand that sharing personal experiences can feel vulnerable, and it’s important to feel safe and comfortable with your therapist. If you decide to work with me, I hope to create an environment of trust and mutual respect, where you feel empowered to work through your concerns.
If you choose another counsellor, make sure they are qualified, belong to a recognised professional body like the BACP, follow an ethical code, and have adequate insurance. These are crucial aspects that ensure a professional and supportive therapeutic relationship.
