Maria focuses on art-making and counselling through play. She works with children of all ages, while she also guides teens and adults through workshops. Maria earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Fine Art and Psychology from Rhodes University. After that, she completed her HDE (PgP) at the University of Cape Town. She then taught art for over 15 years. During this time, she worked closely with many children who showed behavioural challenges. Therefore, she developed a strong interest in finding creative ways to support them.
She continued her studies while working part-time. She completed her Honours in Psychology (BPsych equivalent) through the University of South Africa. Furthermore, she earned her MA in Psychology, where she specialised in Gestalt Play Therapy through North-West University. Because of this, she built a strong foundation in both theory and practice.
Maria brings over 20 years of hands-on experience in education, art, and counselling. She taught art at Westcott Primary School, SACS, and Micklefield Girl’s School. In addition, she lectured visual arts to dance and HDE students at UCT for five years.
Moreover, she led visual art workshops in Saudi Arabia for both teachers and pupils. She also ran many transformation art workshops for children and adults. Through these experiences, she gained valuable insight into different learning and emotional needs.
Maria actively supports her community through her work. She contributed to projects at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Garden Village Primary School. At the same time, she supervised play therapy internship students, which helped grow future professionals in the field.
She also facilitates therapeutic art workshops for NGOs and children’s homes. As a result, more people can access emotional support through creative methods. Her work continues to make a meaningful difference in many lives.
Maria uses a gentle and creative approach in every session. She combines art and play to help clients express what they may struggle to say. In turn, this process supports emotional healing and personal growth. Therefore, each session feels supportive, engaging, and effective.
