Description

Naeema Parker: Clinical Psychologist Claremont, South Africa

About Naeema Parker

I am Naeema Parker, a Clinical Psychologist with a strong commitment to mental health and emotional well-being. After completing my M. Psych (Clinical Psychology) degree at the University of the Western Cape in 2004/2005, I went on to complete my internship and community service at Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital.

In addition to my private practice, I have spent many years teaching and mentoring future psychologists. I worked at MGI Institute (later Pearson’s and Eduvos), where I supervised B. Psych students and taught several undergraduate psychology courses. Following this, I joined the University of Cape Town’s Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. During my eight years there, I taught medical students basic psychotherapy skills.

Since 2017, I have been working at UCT’s Department of Student Wellness, offering mental health care to students. This role has been incredibly fulfilling, as it allows me to support students who might otherwise struggle to access these essential services.

Having experienced therapy myself, I find it deeply enriching to relate to my clients on a more personal level. This journey has allowed me to connect with my clients’ experiences and offer a more empathetic approach to therapy.

I work with individuals from all backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on supporting people of colour. The cultural, religious, and historical challenges faced by many, including the legacy of apartheid, migration, and poverty, can significantly impact mental health. I am passionate about helping people heal from generational trauma and emotional wounds, and I strive to address the stigma that still surrounds mental health within these communities.

Services Offered

I offer individual therapy for adults of all ages. Sessions typically last 50 minutes, and I am contracted with most medical aids, allowing me to process claims directly. For those who do not have medical aid, I provide a private rate that is lower than the usual medical aid rate.

The first two sessions generally involve gathering background information and conducting an assessment. This helps me tailor the treatment plan to meet the unique needs of each client. Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process, so I use a flexible, collaborative approach to ensure we find the best method for each person.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic therapy delves into early life experiences and primary relationships. It seeks to uncover unconscious processes that affect current behaviour and interpersonal dynamics. This therapy also examines unresolved conflicts from past relationships that may impact present-day functioning.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps clients identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviours. It is particularly effective in treating mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety.

Mindfulness and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Mindfulness practices are essential for increasing self-awareness and emotional regulation. DBT, a specialised form of mindfulness therapy, is designed to help individuals manage emotional dysregulation and cope with stress-related challenges.

Brainworking® Recursive Therapy (BWRT)
BWRT is a modern therapeutic technique that addresses negative thought patterns. It is known for its speed and effectiveness in treating issues such as anxiety, trauma, and phobias.
