Penny Stopforth Clinical Psychologist Somerset West provides professional psychotherapy for adults and adolescents in a safe and supportive space.
She works with clients to explore emotions, thoughts, and behaviours that affect mental health. In addition, she creates a calm setting where clients feel heard and understood. Her practice is based in Paardevlei, Somerset West, Cape Town. She also offers both in-person and online therapy, which makes access easier.
Penny Stopforth is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She holds a BSocSci, BSocSci (Hons), and an MA in Clinical Psychology. Furthermore, she uses trauma-informed and mindfulness-based therapy methods.
She focuses on strengthening the link between the mind and body. At the same time, she builds honest and supportive relationships with her clients. This approach helps clients feel safe while working through personal challenges.
Penny has experience in several key areas. Firstly, she supports clients with anxiety. This includes general worry, panic attacks, sleep problems, anticipatory anxiety, and health fears.
Secondly, she works with depression. Clients may experience sadness, hopelessness, guilt, emptiness, irritability, fatigue, or trouble focusing. She also supports those dealing with trauma-related depression.
In addition, she helps with obsessive-compulsive patterns. These include repeated thoughts or actions that disrupt daily life.
She also supports relationship difficulties. Clients may struggle with trust, closeness, boundaries, or loss. Moreover, she guides personal growth. This includes low self-esteem, life changes, mindfulness, assertiveness, and self-reflection.
Starting therapy may feel unfamiliar or even stressful. However, Penny explains each step clearly so clients feel at ease. Sessions usually last 50 minutes. For best results, sessions take place weekly.
Clients pay the practice directly. After that, they can claim back from their medical aid. This process stays simple and clear.
Therapy follows two main phases. Firstly, the assessment phase begins the process. During this session, Penny and the client discuss goals, expectations, and overall fit. As a result, they can decide on the focus and length of therapy.
Secondly, the therapy phase begins. During this stage, clients address immediate concerns or focus on long-term growth. They explore patterns that may affect their mental health. Although this work may feel challenging, it takes place in a safe and supportive space. Therefore, it promotes healing and growth.
Penny combines trauma-informed care with mindfulness-based techniques. She works closely with each client to build insight and practical skills. In turn, clients learn to understand themselves better.
They also learn how to manage emotions and improve coping skills. Over time, therapy supports personal growth, self-awareness, and resilience.
The practice is located in Paardevlei, Somerset West, Cape Town. You can contact Penny at penny@helderbergtherapy.co.za or call +27 61 582 1096 to book an appointment.
