Prof Riaan Mulder

Prof Riaan Mulder qualified as a dentist in 2007 and holds a Master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry as well as a PhD in Paediatric Dentistry from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). His PhD research focused on enhancing glass ionomers used for restorative dental purposes. In 2022, he became the youngest Associate Professor at UWC’s Dental Faculty, a testament to his dedication and expertise.

Since 2008, Prof Mulder has managed his own private practice. In 2014, he joined UWC as a lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry and transitioned to the Prosthetic Dentistry Department in 2019. There, he trains dental students and provides specialised care to special-needs and geriatric patients.

Prof Mulder is also a committed researcher with 68 national and international journal articles to his name. He serves as the only National Research Foundation (NRF) researcher at the UWC Faculty of Dentistry. His current research focuses on developing medical and dental devices, including the Dental Aerosol Suction Device (DASD), which he patented in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. Prof Mulder has been a key opinion leader for 3M in Dental Materials since 2015 and regularly lectures at national and international dental conferences.
