Rainbow Oncology, based in Durban, is headed by Dr. Waldemar Szpak, a highly qualified Clinical and Radiation Oncologist. His career began in Poland, where his passion for medicine grew alongside a love for learning about different cultures. After marrying his wife Teresa and specialising in internal medicine, Dr. Szpak moved to Germany. In 1992, he decided to emigrate to South Africa, drawn by the country’s “Rainbow Nation” concept.
Dr. Szpak’s journey led him to the role of Principal Medical Officer at Addington Hospital in Durban. He spent years working at Addington and the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, eventually qualifying as a Fellow in Oncology. In 2003, Dr. Szpak furthered his expertise in the UK at the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment, before returning to South Africa in 2004. There, he joined Amanzimtoti Oncology Services, which later became Rainbow Oncology.
Rainbow Oncology provides comprehensive oncology care tailored to each patient’s needs.
Radiation therapy is a key treatment at Rainbow Oncology. Dr. Szpak uses advanced radiation techniques to target and destroy cancer cells, minimising harm to surrounding healthy tissue. This treatment is effective for various cancer types and stages.
Chemotherapy is another critical aspect of our treatment services. It involves using drugs to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells throughout the body. Dr. Szpak and his team manage side effects and adjust treatments to suit each patient’s specific condition.
We believe in creating customised treatment plans for every patient. Dr. Szpak’s extensive knowledge in oncology allows him to tailor therapies to match the type, stage, and overall health of each patient. The goal is to achieve the best results while maintaining a high quality of life.
At Rainbow Oncology, we provide more than just medical treatment. Our team includes dieticians, physiotherapists, and social workers who help support patients emotionally and physically. We strive to give our patients the resources they need to cope with their cancer journey.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Szpak enjoys spending time with his wife of almost 40 years, their three cats, and their two grandchildren. He also loves mountain biking and caring for his bonsais.
Dr. Szpak is an active member of the South African Oncology Consortium and served as Chairman from 2010 to 2015. He continuously updates his knowledge by attending international oncology conferences and contributes to the advancement of cancer treatment. His dedication ensures that Rainbow Oncology stays at the forefront of modern cancer care.
