About SADSAWU Domestic Workers Union South Africa

The South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU) was established to address the lack of legal protection for domestic workers in South Africa. Although the democratic government introduced new labour laws, domestic workers did not receive the same protections as many other workers.

The history of domestic work in South Africa includes a long period of exploitation, especially during the Apartheid era. As a result, domestic workers faced serious challenges in their working lives.

Despite financial difficulties, the union continued to work towards better living and working conditions for domestic workers. However, by 1998, the South African Domestic Workers Union (SADWU) had to close because of financial constraints. This showed the difficulty of maintaining a union in a sector where many workers earn some of the lowest wages in the country.

The Formation of SADSAWU

However, the work did not end there. In 2000, a group of domestic workers formed a new union called SADSAWU in KwaZulu-Natal.

The union’s main goal was to campaign for domestic workers to receive the protection of labour laws. In this way, domestic workers could gain access to rights that workers in other sectors already had.

SADSAWU therefore continued the work of supporting domestic workers and fighting against their exclusion from important labour protections.
