Shelley is a registered clinical psychologist with the HPCSA. He completed his training at the University of Cape Town. And Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. Shelley works as a clinician in a hospital psychiatric ward. And runs a private practice in Johannesburg.

He is an active member of professional organizations. And publishes on psychotherapeutic techniques, childhood sexual abuse, and HIV risk.

Shelley holds a Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSc) in Psychology & Media and Writing from UCT, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Psychology (with distinction) from UCT, and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology (with distinction) from NMMU. He has also completed a one-year course in Self Psychology and Intersubjectivity at the New York Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity.

Shelley is a member of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP) and the founder of the Johannesburg Relational Therapeutic Alliance (JRTA). He has published articles on childhood sexual abuse, HIV risk behavior among South African men, and the relational impact of shame and internalized homophobia.
