The Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen (SFISM) is Switzerland’s premier institution dedicated exclusively to education, research, and services in the field of sport. Located in Magglingen, the Human Performance Lab is a cornerstone of SFISM’s commitment to advancing sports science and athlete development.
Facilities and Equipment
The Human Performance Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to assess and enhance athletic performance. Key features include:
Mobile spiroergometry systems for respiratory gas analysis
Heart rate monitoring and electrocardiogram (ECG) capabilities
Lactate measurement tools
Peripheral oxygen saturation assessment
These tools enable comprehensive evaluation of an athlete’s physiological responses during exercise, facilitating tailored training programs.
Research and Collaboration
The lab fosters a collaborative environment, engaging in multidisciplinary research projects. Notably, it supports the Bachelor’s degree course in physiotherapy at the Bern University of Applied Sciences. Additionally, the lab collaborates with national sports federations and Swiss Olympic, contributing to applied research projects such as “ESSO” and “Beat the Heat.”
Services Offered
The Human Performance Lab provides a range of services to athletes and researchers, including:
Maximum effort tests on ergometers, treadmills, and through free exercise
Research cooperation and collaboration on projects
Teaching and further training in performance physiology
These services are designed to support both elite athletes and emerging talents in their pursuit of excellence.
Looking ahead, the Human Performance Lab aims to expand its research initiatives and enhance its facilities. Plans include the development of a new physiotherapeutic research base at the Münchenstein site near Basel, further strengthening its role in advancing sports science.
