The Tygerberg Art Centre started in 1975. At first, it operated from the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre. However, a fire damaged the building. As a result, the Centre moved to the historic Tygerberg High School site. It then joined with the old Education Centre.

Today, the Centre sits in McIntyre Street. This location makes it easy to reach from nearby suburbs. Over the years, it has become a strong part of arts education in the Western Cape. In fact, it has supported learners for almost five decades.

Mr. André Groenewald served as the first headmaster. He built a solid base for the Centre. After him, two interim principals managed the school. Later, a permanent principal took over leadership.
