Penny Stopforth Clinical Psychologist Somerset West provides professional psychotherapy for adults and adolescents in a supportive and safe environment. She helps clients explore emotions, thoughts, and behaviours that affect mental health. Her practice is based in Paardevlei, Somerset West, Cape Town, offering both in-person and online therapy.
Penny Stopforth is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She holds a BSocSci, BSocSci (Hons), and MA in Clinical Psychology. She specialises in trauma-informed, mindfulness-based psychotherapy. Her approach strengthens the connection between mind and body while prioritising authentic, collaborative relationships with clients.
Penny has experience in:
Anxiety: General worry, panic attacks, sleep difficulties, anticipatory anxiety, and health-related fears.
Depression: Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt, emptiness, irritability, fatigue, concentration issues, and trauma-related depression.
Obsessive-compulsive Patterns: Repetitive thoughts or behaviours that interfere with daily life.
Relationship Difficulties: Challenges in intimacy, emotional closeness, trust, boundaries, and coping with loss of relationships.
Personal Growth: Low self-esteem, transitions, life adjustments, mindfulness, assertiveness, and self-reflection skills.
Psychotherapy can feel unfamiliar or anxiety-provoking at first. Penny explains the process to help clients feel comfortable. Sessions typically last 50 minutes and ideally occur weekly for consistent progress. Payment is made directly to the practice, and clients can claim from medical aid afterward.
The therapy process has two phases:
Assessment Phase: The first session explores goals, expectations, and how well the client and therapist “fit” together. This helps determine the therapy length and focus.
Therapy Phase: Therapy addresses immediate crises or longer-term personal growth. Clients explore patterns that hinder psychological health, often in challenging but safe ways, to promote healing and development.
Penny integrates trauma-informed and mindfulness-based techniques. She emphasises collaboration, insight, and tailored strategies. Her work allows clients to build self-awareness, regulate emotions, and strengthen coping skills. Therapy provides a space for personal exploration, growth, and resilience.
The practice is located in Paardevlei, Somerset West, Cape Town. Contact Penny at penny@helderbergtherapy.co.za or +27 61 582 1096 to schedule an appointment.
