Description

Dr Murphy Orthodontics, Hermanus

Meet Dr Murphy

Dr Desmond Murphy qualified as a dentist in 1990 from UWC and practiced in Retreat, Cape Town, for 14 years. In 2004, he transitioned to orthodontics and completed his training in 2008. That same year, he opened practices in Fish Hoek, Strand, and Hermanus. Additionally, Dr Murphy is passionate about education, serving as a consultant at UWC and holding leadership roles with the South African Society of Orthodontists and Rainbow Early Childhood Development Centre.

About Us

Located on Hermanus’ main road, our practice has been serving the community since the 1970s. In 2009, Dr Murphy re-opened it to address the growing need for orthodontic care. As a result, patients from areas like Bredasdorp, Sandbaai, and Gansbaai now visit without needing to travel far. Moreover, our practice is close to local schools, so many students walk here, and their parents later collect them.

Treatments

Removable Braces
These braces are ideal for younger patients or those needing minor tooth movements. Worn for 12-14 hours a day, we offer:

  • Functional Appliances: These are full-time braces that stimulate jaw growth and require precise timing for success.
  • Removable Plates: Used for minor adjustments or arch expansion, these braces can be removed, making cleaning easier than traditional braces.

Clear Braces
Clear braces are removable trays worn 24/7 to gently move teeth into place. Comfortable and discreet, they are effective for treating crowding, overbites, underbites, and gaps. Furthermore, they are easy to clean, unlike traditional braces, making them a popular choice.

Fixed Braces
Fixed braces remain in place throughout treatment. We offer:

  • Metal Braces: Smaller and less noticeable than traditional metal braces, they are suitable for most patients.
  • Ceramic Braces: Made from clear ceramic, these braces blend with your teeth, making them ideal for self-conscious teenagers.

Oral Hygiene
It’s important to practice good oral hygiene during treatment. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and visit your dentist regularly. By doing so, you can prevent plaque, tartar, and gum disease, ensuring a healthy mouth and successful treatment.
