Dr Murphy Orthodontist Hermanus provides orthodontic care for patients in Hermanus and nearby areas.
Dr Desmond Murphy qualified as a dentist from UWC in 1990 and practised in Retreat, Cape Town, for 14 years. In 2004, he moved into orthodontics and completed his training in 2008. That same year, he opened practices in Fish Hoek, Strand, and Hermanus. In addition, Dr Murphy has a strong interest in education. He serves as a consultant at UWC and holds leadership roles with the South African Society of Orthodontists and Rainbow Early Childhood Development Centre.
Our practice sits on the main road in Hermanus and has served the local community since the 1970s. In 2009, Dr Murphy re-opened the practice to meet the growing need for orthodontic care. As a result, patients from Bredasdorp, Sandbaai, and Gansbaai can access orthodontic care without travelling far. The practice also sits close to local schools. Therefore, many students walk to their appointments, while their parents collect them later.
We offer several orthodontic treatment options to meet different patient needs.
Removable Braces
Removable braces work well for younger patients or patients who need minor tooth movements. Patients wear them for 12–14 hours each day. We offer functional appliances and removable plates.
Functional Appliances: These full-time braces stimulate jaw growth. However, treatment needs precise timing to work well.
Removable Plates: These braces help with minor adjustments or arch expansion. Patients can remove them, which makes cleaning easier than with traditional braces.
Clear Braces
Clear braces consist of removable trays that patients wear 24/7. They gently move teeth into place and offer a comfortable, discreet option. They can treat crowding, overbites, underbites, and gaps. In addition, patients can clean them easily, unlike traditional braces.
Fixed braces stay in place throughout treatment. We offer metal braces and ceramic braces.
Metal Braces: These braces are smaller and less noticeable than traditional metal braces. They suit most patients.
Ceramic Braces: These braces use clear ceramic material that blends with the teeth. Therefore, they can suit self-conscious teenagers.
Good oral hygiene plays an important role during orthodontic treatment. Brush twice a day and floss every day. Also, visit your dentist regularly. By following these steps, you can help prevent plaque, tartar, and gum disease. Good oral care also supports a healthy mouth and successful treatment.
