Dr Leigh Johannes Physician Nephrologist Knysna is a highly skilled and dedicated specialist providing exceptional care for kidney and internal medicine patients. She joined Life Knysna Hospital to bring her expertise in nephrology and patient-focused care to the local community. She focuses on early diagnosis, prevention, and tailored treatment plans to improve patients’ kidney health and overall well-being.
Dr Johannes completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Stellenbosch University in 2013. She continued her studies with a Diploma in HIV Management in 2017, followed by a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2021. She also earned her Fellowship as a Physician and later specialized in nephrology, obtaining her Certificate in Nephrology from the College of Physicians (SA) in 2023.
Dr Johannes has worked in leading hospitals and practices across South Africa. She served as a Medical Officer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Thelle Mogerane Regional Hospital. She further honed her nephrology skills as a Nephrology Fellow at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Later, she joined VWG Nephrology Group Practice and various medical centres as a Specialist Physician. Her diverse experience ensures high-quality care for patients with kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
Dr Johannes developed a passion for nephrology during her community service. She witnessed the life-changing impact of kidney transplants and how they can free patients from chronic dialysis. This experience inspired her to focus on kidney disease, an underrecognized health challenge in South Africa. She strives to improve quality of life through early diagnosis, preventative care, and patient education.
Life Knysna Hospital provides the perfect environment for Dr Johannes to deliver comprehensive nephrology care. She focuses on early intervention, critical care nephrology, and acute kidney injury management. Her goal is to ensure patients reach optimal health targets while preventing the progression of kidney disease. She is also dedicated to early transplant evaluation and preventative medicine.
Dr Johannes believes in clear communication, education, and support for both patients and families. She ensures patients understand their treatment plans and feel empowered throughout their care journey. Her move to Knysna Life Hospital marks a new chapter in her mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by kidney disease.
Outside of medicine, Dr Johannes enjoys traveling across Africa, exploring new cultures and landscapes. She has a passion for cooking, baking, kickboxing, and aims to expand her skills in mixed martial arts. Her personal interests reflect her commitment to a balanced and vibrant lifestyle.
