Dr Alessandra Merizzi is a seasoned psychologist and Gestalt psychotherapist based in Manchester. With a wealth of experience both in the UK and internationally, she takes a holistic and person-centred approach to therapy. Her specialism lies in Gestalt Therapy, a method that sees individuals as complete beings, valuing both mental and physical experiences.
Gestalt, a German term meaning “shape” or “form,” underpins her therapeutic philosophy. She views each client as a whole entity—mind, body, and environment interwoven. Rather than digging solely into past trauma, her work focuses on the “here and now”, enabling clients to experience and process their emotions in the present moment. This method fosters deep awareness and change through the therapeutic relationship itself.
With extensive training and a global perspective, Alessandra creates a collaborative, safe, and open environment where growth and healing can unfold. Her online presence also allows her to work beyond borders, engaging with clients and organisations across Europe.
Dr Merizzi offers a wide range of services to support individuals, couples, and older adults:
Gestalt Psychotherapy
Alessandra works with adults from multicultural backgrounds, supporting challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, panic attacks, bereavement, chronic illness, and emotional regulation. She also assists clients experiencing neurological conditions or disabilities, always tailoring her work to suit each unique situation.
Work with Older Adults
With a strong clinical background, Alessandra is particularly experienced in working with older adults living with brain conditions such as dementia, stroke, or brain cancer. She leads cognitive rehabilitation, psychoeducational sessions, and therapeutic groups. In addition, she supports carers and families through integrated therapy and neuropsychological assessments.
Research and Innovation
A passionate researcher, she has collaborated with the National Institute of Health and Science on Ageing, and served as the UK lead in an international dementia and driving study. Her academic contributions are widely published and respected in the mental health field.
Teaching and Supervision
Alessandra lectures on ageing and mental health, and she is progressing toward full accreditation as a Gestalt trainer and supervisor. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy Supervision from UCLAN and has contributed as a trainer assistant at the Manchester Gestalt Centre.
Beyond therapy, Alessandra is active in community and professional networks. She’s a member and representative of numerous associations, including:
Gestalt Psychotherapy & Training Institute (GPTI) – Accredited Member and Treasurer
Manchester Gestalt Centre (MGC) – Board Member
European Association for Gestalt Therapy (EAGT) – Accredited Member and Italian Representative
Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA) – Ordinary Member
Texere – Founder and Board Member
Alessandra also volunteers, writes for academic journals, and speaks at international conferences. She is increasingly engaged in climate-focused mental health, launching Climate Cafés to support eco-anxiety and environmental awareness.
Dr Alessandra Merizzi’s practice blends rigour with empathy, theory with presence. Whether you seek support for personal growth, trauma recovery, ageing-related issues or couple dynamics, her integrative approach offers deep and lasting change. Dr.ssa Alessandra Merizzi – Psicologa
