Dr Johannes Viljoen is a fellowship-trained Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeon practicing in George and Mossel Bay. He earned his BChD from the University of Pretoria in 1987, followed by a Dip Odont. in 1993. After serving with the SADF Medical Corps, he practised general dentistry for seven years before pursuing medicine. Consequently, he returned to the University of Pretoria to complete his MBChB in 1999 and his MChD (Chirurgia Maxillofacialis et Medica) in 2003.
Moreover, Dr Viljoen opened his private practice in Krugersdorp in 2003 and relocated to George in 2005. He maintains active membership with the South African Society of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons (SASMFOS), the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS), and the AO Foundation for Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (AOCMF). As a result, he stays at the forefront of innovative techniques in trauma care, reconstructive surgery, and craniofacial anomalies.
Driven by core values of compassion, integrity, and professionalism, Dr Viljoen leads every patient through a clear, supportive journey. He begins with a thorough clinical evaluation—often including panoramic X-rays or 3D CT scans—to establish an accurate diagnosis and craft a personalized treatment plan.
Dr Viljoen offers a comprehensive spectrum of oral and maxillofacial procedures, each delivered with precision and modern technology:
Surgical Extractions: He removes impacted wisdom and other difficult teeth using local anesthesia or conscious sedation for maximum comfort.
Dental Implants: He places implants guided by 3D CT planning and custom surgical guides, thereby optimizing implant positioning and osseointegration.
Orthodontic Surgery: He exposes impacted teeth and performs jaw realignment in collaboration with orthodontists to achieve ideal occlusion.
Orthognathic Surgery: He corrects jaw deformities through Le Fort and mandibular osteotomies, restoring facial balance and improving airway function.
Oral Pathology Management: He biopsies and treats cysts, benign tumours, and mucosal lesions within the oral cavity with meticulous technique.
TMJ Disorder Surgery: He performs arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, and open joint repair to relieve chronic pain and restore mandibular function.
Salivary Gland Procedures: He removes salivary stones and performs gland excisions under magnification to preserve gland function.
Facial Trauma Reconstruction: He fixes fractures of the mandible, maxilla, and zygoma using titanium plates and microsurgical techniques for optimal healing.
Our George practice features state-of-the-art 3D CT imaging and panoramic radiography, which enable Dr Viljoen to visualize detailed anatomy and plan surgery with exceptional accuracy. Consequently, he minimizes surgical risks and enhances outcomes. For minor procedures, patients enjoy a warm, non-hospital environment, while complex surgeries occur under general anesthesia in accredited local hospitals.
Dr Viljoen leads a dedicated team of surgical nurses and administrative staff, all committed to seamless care from the initial consultation through recovery. Therefore, patients receive clear pre- and post-operative instructions, written estimates, and personalized support. Moreover, the clinic coordinates medical-aid authorizations, though we encourage patients to verify benefits directly with their insurers.
In addition, our suites in George and Mossel Bay offer comfortable recovery lounges, wheelchair-friendly access, and multilingual support staff. We host regular patient education workshops on oral health, postoperative care, and injury prevention.
