Dr Jacques Wynand Rood – Physician (Internal Medicine) – Brackenfell practices at Mediclinic Cape Gate, offering expert internal medicine and diagnostic services. He graduated MBChB from the University of Stellenbosch in 2012 with multiple distinctions—including the Welch Allyn Merit Award for outstanding performance in ENT—and subsequently ranked among the Top 10 in Internal Medicine. Moreover, he completed his Dip HIV Management in 2015 and achieved FCP (SA) fellowship status along with an MMed (Internal Medicine) in 2021 drrood.co.za.
After serving his internship (2013–2014) and community service year (2015) at Potchefstroom Hospital—where he honed acute-care and decision-making skills—Dr Rood returned to the Western Cape as a Medical Officer at Tygerberg Hospital in 2016. Consequently, he refined his expertise in heart failure, osteoporosis, and complex chronic conditions and led community-based COVID-19 response efforts during all four waves drrood.co.za.
Furthermore, Dr Rood’s passion for diagnostic medicine has driven multiple research projects. He is first author on two original articles and co-author on several studies published in the South African Medical Journal. Thus, he remains at the forefront of evolving medical evidence and integrates digital point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and ambulatory ECG monitoring into routine practice.
Chronic Disease Management: personalised plans for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidaemia, using lifestyle coaching and pharmacologic optimisation.
Heart Failure Care: advanced therapies including natriuretic peptide monitoring, echocardiography-guided treatment adjustments, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
Osteoporosis & Metabolic Bone Disease: DEXA-guided diagnosis, bisphosphonate therapy, and fall-risk reduction strategies.
HIV Management: comprehensive ARV initiation, viral-load monitoring, and comorbidity screening in line with national guidelines.
Diagnostic Medicine: in-depth evaluation of fevers of unknown origin, anaemia, and autoimmune disorders, supported by digital workflows.
Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS): bedside cardiac, lung, and abdominal scans for rapid assessment of effusions, pneumothorax, and organomegaly.
Electrolyte & Acid–Base Disorders: targeted correction protocols for sodium, potassium, and acid–base imbalances.
Infectious Disease Work-up: coordinated diagnostics for tuberculosis, endocarditis, and complex sepsis using blood cultures and PCR panels.
Ambulatory Monitoring: 24-hour blood pressure and Holter ECG studies to refine treatment in refractory cases.
Telemedicine Follow-Ups: virtual consultations for stable chronic-disease patients, ensuring continuity of care.
Mediclinic Cape Gate features ultramodern investigation suites with digital radiography, integrated laboratory services, and real-time reporting, thereby streamlining diagnosis and treatment planning. Moreover, Dr Rood leads a multidisciplinary team—including cardiologists, endocrinologists, dietitians, and physiotherapists—to deliver cohesive, patient-centred care. Consequently, patients benefit from coordinated pathways that address both medical and lifestyle needs.
Patient experience is central to his practice. Therefore, Dr Rood ensures clear, compassionate communication, explaining complex diagnoses in accessible terms. Furthermore, he adheres to stringent infection-control and quality-assurance protocols, maximising both safety and comfort. Additionally, he offers personalised health-education workshops on topics such as heart-healthy diets and bone-strengthening exercise.
Beyond clinical duties, Dr Rood mentors medical students and registrar physicians, sharing expertise in diagnostic reasoning and evidence-based practice.
