Fiona Rayner Consultant Rheumatologist Newcastle leads with experience, compassion, and a deep-rooted passion for helping patients with inflammatory joint conditions. From early in her medical career, Dr Rayner knew she wanted to make a meaningful impact in rheumatology. After graduating from Newcastle University in 2008, she undertook medical training across hospitals in the North East. This journey laid the foundation for her expertise and her dedication to the specialty.
Dr Rayner originally hails from Nottingham. However, her professional heart lies in Newcastle, where she completed her medical studies. During her foundation and core medical training, she discovered a keen interest in rheumatology. This passion continued to grow as she entered specialist training. Her drive to understand the underlying causes of disease pushed her to undertake a PhD. Her research focused on the mechanisms behind rheumatoid arthritis flares, a complex yet vital area in rheumatology.
In 2023, Dr Rayner began her consultant role at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Her role involves diagnosing and treating various forms of inflammatory arthritis. Notably, her skills extend to advanced techniques such as musculoskeletal ultrasound and synovial biopsies. She uses these tools not only to improve diagnostic accuracy but also to guide targeted treatments. As a result, patients benefit from faster, more effective care.
Research continues to play a central role in Dr Rayner’s career. She actively recruits patients into clinical trials, offering them early access to cutting-edge treatments. In addition, she leads research projects at the clinical research facility based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). Through her involvement, she helps shape future rheumatology care, both locally and nationally.
Dr Rayner combines clinical excellence with empathy and innovation. She believes that great care stems from strong communication, patient involvement, and staying at the forefront of medical science. Her dual role as a clinician and researcher ensures that her patients receive both the latest treatments and personalised care. Every step of her journey reflects a commitment to improve lives through rheumatology.
