ACVV Welfare Organisation Cape Town: About Us

Established in 1904, the ACVV (Afrikaans Christelike Vroue Vereniging) is one of South Africa’s largest welfare organisations. It provides social work and child protection services to people in need. The ACVV focuses on community service and uses a people-centred approach to provide meaningful, long-term support.

Our History

The ACVV began on 1 September 1904 in Cape Town. A group of women created the organisation to provide practical help to people affected by the Anglo-Boer War. Over time, the small initiative grew into a nationwide organisation focused on social welfare, child protection, and elderly care.

At first, the ACVV provided emergency relief, primary healthcare, and educational services. However, its work later expanded into holistic social work programmes that empower communities. Today, its welfare services support people across South Africa through targeted and sustainable interventions.

Our Organisational Structure

The ACVV uses a democratic, community-driven structure. This allows local communities to provide input and helps the organisation meet their needs.

115 Registered Branches

Each branch is a separate non-profit organisation (NPO). Branches operate independently while remaining affiliated with the national body. Volunteers manage the branches, which employ staff and oversee several service programmes.

ACVV Congress

Every three years, the ACVV holds a Congress. Each branch has voting power and helps shape policies and strategies. This process supports active participation in community work.

National Council

The ACVV National Council has 24 representatives who speak for their regions. The Council manages policy-making, strategy development, networking, and service standards.

Head Office in Cape Town

The ACVV Head Office in Cape Town manages national operations with 10 dedicated staff members. The team supports branches, helps shape policy, and ensures service standards are implemented.

Regional Middle Management

The National Council employs 16 middle managers across different regions and service areas. They provide specialised supervision, consultation, and support to social workers, management teams, and volunteers.

Our Services Offered

The ACVV provides welfare services for children, families, and older persons. Its programmes focus on protection, empowerment, and long-term social development.

Child Protection Services

The ACVV Welfare Organisation Cape Town advocates for vulnerable children and intervenes in cases of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. It also supports family reunification and foster care.

Social Work and Family Support

Families in crisis can receive guidance and counselling. Services also support parenting skills, trauma recovery, mental well-being, and community outreach that addresses poverty and social issues.

Elderly Care Services
