ACVV – Committed to Serving Communities for Over a Century

About Us

With a legacy spanning more than 111 years, the ACVV (Afrikaans Christelike Vroue Vereniging) remains dedicated to protecting and nurturing children, families, and older persons. Established in 1904, the ACVV has grown into one of South Africa’s largest welfare organisations, providing comprehensive social work and child protection services to those in need.

Our mission is deeply rooted in community service, with a people-centred approach that ensures meaningful, long-term support for the most vulnerable members of society.

Our History

The ACVV was founded on 1 September 1904 in Cape Town by a group of women determined to provide practical assistance to those affected by the Anglo-Boer War. What began as a small initiative has evolved into a nationwide organisation dedicated to social welfare, child protection, and elderly care.

Originally focused on emergency relief, primary healthcare, and educational services, the ACVV has transformed over the decades to offer holistic social work programmes that empower communities. Today, our welfare services extend across South Africa, supporting individuals through targeted, sustainable interventions.

Our Organisational Structure

The ACVV’s strength lies in its democratic and community-driven approach. Our structure allows for local input and governance, ensuring that our services meet the needs of the communities we serve.

115 Registered Branches

  • Each branch is a separate non-profit organisation (NPO), operating independently but affiliated with the national body.
  • Managed by volunteers, these branches act as employers and oversee multiple service programmes.

ACVV Congress

  • Every three years, a Congress is held, where each branch has a voting power to shape policies and strategies.
  • This structure ensures active participation from those directly involved in community work.

National Council

  • The ACVV National Council consists of 24 representatives, each advocating for the needs of their respective regions.
  • The Council focuses on policy-making, strategy development, networking, and maintaining service standards across all branches.

Head Office in Cape Town

  • The ACVV Head Office is responsible for overseeing national operations, consisting of 10 dedicated staff members.
  • The team provides support services to affiliated branches, influences policy decisions, and ensures implementation of service standards.

Regional Middle Management

  • 16 middle managers are employed by the ACVV National Council and are strategically placed in different regions and service areas.
  • These professionals offer specialised supervision, consultation, and support to social workers, management teams, and volunteers.
