Prof Andre van Zyl is a highly respected periodontist with extensive experience in periodontics, oral medicine, and implantology. He qualified cum laude as a periodontist from the University of Stellenbosch in 1989 and has since made significant contributions to the field through private practice, academic leadership, and research.

His career spans both private practice and academia:

• 1989 – 1996: Private practice in Cape Town and Somerset West
• 1998 – 2003: Head of the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics at Stellenbosch University
• 2004 – 2006: Private practice in Cape Town and London, UK
• 2006 – 2018: Head of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, University of Pretoria
• 2018 – Present: Private practice in Hermanus, Western Cape
• 2018: Appointed Honorary Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics, University of Witwatersrand

Prof van Zyl pioneered South Africa’s first postgraduate diploma in oral implantology in 1999, offering distance learning, live surgery, and hands-on training. He also established and chaired the ITI Centre of Excellence and ITI Scholarship Centre at the University of Pretoria from 2013 to 2018.

He has published and lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, on implant dentistry, oral cancer, and applied surgical anatomy.
