He qualified cum laude as a periodontist from the University of Stellenbosch in 1989. Since then, he has built a career in private practice, academic leadership, and research. His work has covered periodontics, oral medicine, and implantology.

His career includes private practice in Cape Town and Somerset West from 1989 to 1996. From 1998 to 2003, he served as Head of the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics at Stellenbosch University. He then worked in private practice in Cape Town and London, UK, from 2004 to 2006.

From 2006 to 2018, Prof van Zyl served as Head of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Pretoria. In 2018, he returned to private practice in Hermanus, Western Cape. That same year, he became Honorary Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of Witwatersrand.

Prof van Zyl pioneered South Africa’s first postgraduate diploma in oral implantology in 1999. The programme offered distance learning, live surgery, and hands-on training.
