Diagnosis and Medical Imaging of Adenomyosis

Diagnosis and Medical Imaging of Adenomyosis

Diagnosis and Medical Imaging of Adenomyosis

Diagnosing adenomyosis can be difficult because its symptoms mimic those of other uterine conditions. However, with improved imaging tools, non-invasive diagnosis is now more accessible.

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Medical History and Pelvic Exam
    • A doctor may feel for an enlarged or tender uterus.
  2. Ultrasound (Transvaginal Sonography)
    • A skilled sonographer can sometimes detect thickened uterine walls or cystic areas in the myometrium.
  3. MRI Scan
    • This is more accurate than ultrasound but less accessible, especially in rural South Africa.
  4. Biopsy
    • Rarely done unless surgery is performed, as the tissue is deep within the muscle.
  5. Rule Out Other Conditions
    • Fibroids, endometriosis, or uterine polyps must be excluded.

Diagnosis and Medical Imaging of Adenomyosis

In some public hospitals, diagnosis may only be confirmed after a hysterectomy, which is not ideal. Increasing awareness and imaging skills among GPs and sonographers can help with earlier, non-surgical diagnosis.
