Complications of Arthritis

Without proper treatment, arthritis can lead to serious physical, emotional, and functional complications, some of which may be permanent. Learn more about the complications of arthritis below.

1. Joint Damage and Deformity

  • Chronic inflammation wears away cartilage and bone
  • Leads to joint deformity, reduced mobility, and pain
  • Common in rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis

2. Loss of Mobility

  • Stiff joints and muscle weakness limit independence
  • May require assistive devices or long-term care

3. Disability

  • Severe arthritis can impair a person’s ability to work, perform self-care, or participate in daily life

4. Systemic Involvement (Autoimmune Arthritis)

  • Rheumatoid arthritis may affect the lungs, heart, eyes, or blood vessels
  • Increases the risk of cardiovascular disease

5. Osteoporosis

  • Inactivity and corticosteroid use can weaken bones
  • Raises the risk of fractures

6. Mental Health Struggles

  • Chronic pain may lead to depression, anxiety, or social withdrawal
  • Emotional support and counselling are important

7. Medication Side Effects

  • Long-term use of NSAIDs or steroids may cause:
    • Stomach ulcers
    • High blood pressure
    • Liver or kidney strain

Prevention of Complications

  • Early diagnosis and treatment
  • Regular check-ups and monitoring
  • Healthy lifestyle and adherence to medication
  • Patient education and support networks

With proper management, many people with arthritis live active, fulfilling lives. In South Africa, ongoing education and improved access to care are helping more people manage the condition successfully.
