Causes and Risk Factors of APD

Causes and Risk Factors of APD

Causes and Risk Factors of APD

The exact causes and risk factors of APD isn’t always clear, but it’s believed to involve impaired neural processing in the auditory pathways between the ear and the brain. This affects how sound is interpreted rather than how it is received.

Possible causes and contributors:

  • Delayed auditory development in children
  • Chronic ear infections during early childhood
  • Premature birth or low birth weight
  • Head injuries or trauma
  • Neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis or stroke
  • Genetic factors and family history

Risk factors:

  • A history of otitis media (middle ear infections) during language development
  • Exposure to consistent loud noise
  • Language processing disorders or dyslexia
  • Attention difficulties (including ADHD)

Causes and Risk Factors of APD

In South Africa, limited access to early hearing care and speech-language services in rural areas can delay diagnosis. APD does not result from hearing loss, intellectual disability, or a lack of motivation, although it may coexist with these conditions.

Understanding the Roots of APD

The causes and risk factors of auditory processing disorder are varied and often complex. Although hearing loss or low intelligence does not cause it, early childhood factors—such as chronic ear infections, premature birth, or neurological conditions—can interfere with how the brain processes sound. Genetic influences and coexisting conditions such as ADHD or dyslexia can also play a role, although they do not directly cause APD.

Why Early Awareness Matters

Recognising the potential contributors to APD can support earlier diagnosis and targeted intervention. In South Africa, where access to hearing and language support may be uneven across communities, awareness of these risk factors is crucial. Identifying children at risk and understanding that APD affects auditory interpretation—not hearing ability—can help reduce long-term academic and emotional challenges.
