Complications of Angioedema

Complications of Angioedema

Complications of Angioedema

While many cases of angioedema are mild, severe or untreated episodes can lead to life-threatening complications. Understanding these risks and complications of angioedema helps patients seek prompt treatment and avoid recurrence.

1. Airway Obstruction

  • The most serious complication
  • Swelling of the tongue, throat, or larynx can block airflow, leading to suffocation
  • Requires urgent adrenaline and airway support

2. Recurrent Attacks

  • Common in hereditary and idiopathic angioedema
  • Can impact school, work, and social life
  • May require long-term medication and lifestyle changes

3. Abdominal Attacks

  • In hereditary cases, swelling in the intestines may cause:
    • Severe abdominal pain
    • Vomiting and diarrhoea
    • Misdiagnosis as appendicitis or IBS

4. Psychological Impact

  • Recurrent, unpredictable swelling can lead to:
    • Anxiety
    • Social withdrawal
    • Fear of public episodes

5. Medication-Related Issues

  • ACE inhibitor angioedema may recur even after stopping the drug
  • Improper treatment (e.g. using only antihistamines for HAE) may delay recovery

Prevention and Monitoring the Complications of Angioedema

  • Identify and avoid known triggers
  • Always carry emergency medication
  • Educate close contacts about signs and first aid
  • Follow up regularly with a healthcare provider

With the right diagnosis, care, and emergency plan, most people with angioedema can live safe, active lives.
